Goat milk has many health benefits for both cats and dogs, not just human beings. The main health benefit of goat milk compared to cow’s milk is that it does not contain beta-lactoglobulin or A1 casein protein which can cause an adverse reaction in up to 75% of all cats and dogs. Goat milk naturally contains very little lactose which results in much less gas and bloating than other milks, making it easier on your pet’s tummy.
1) Kidney Health
Kidney disease is a serious health condition that can lead to organ failure and even death. Luckily, goat milk contains high levels of B vitamins, protein, phosphorous and other nutrients that are crucial in keeping kidneys healthy. It also helps maintain cardiovascular health, bone density and eye sight – which all make kidney disease less likely. Regularly giving your pet goat milk will help keep their kidneys healthy throughout their life.
2) Skin Health
All mammals have skin composed of a thick layer of dead cells, which is called an epithelium. This epithelium contains keratin, a protein that helps strengthen hair and nails in humans and protects them from infectious diseases. There are various breeds of goats, such as pygmy goats and Nigerian dwarf goats, that are known to produce milk with high levels of keratin.
3) Bone Strength
A study out of Cornell University concluded that goat milk has significantly higher levels of an essential bone-strengthening nutrient called proline than cow milk. These levels are higher in all types, including skim, whole and lactose-free goat milk. Proline is important to young animals because it forms collagen and elastin, both extremely important factors in building strong bones.
4) Less Allergy Risk
Allergic reactions are relatively common in cats and dogs, but are less likely to occur with goat milk than cow milk. Because goats naturally make less casein (the primary allergen in cow’s milk) than cows, many pet owners find that their pets experience fewer digestive problems and allergic reactions when switching to goat’s milk.
5) A Natural Laxative
Goat milk contains both lactose and casein, which are natural laxatives that cause bowel movements to occur naturally. This keeps your pet’s digestive system clean and prevents problems such as constipation. To try goat milk out, add a half cup of goat milk to your pet’s regular diet; if your pet can tolerate it, you can mix in up to two cups a day.
6) Easier Digestion
Goat milk is easier to digest than cow’s milk, which makes it easier on your pet’s tummy. This can be helpful in pets with allergies, food sensitivities or illness that affect their ability to tolerate other types of milk better than goat milk, says Dr. Bonnie Beaver.
